Only one Church!

Recently the Pope has approved the releasing of a document that reiterates the Roman Catholic position that it only is the only true Church because of its doctrine of apostolic succession. Many Protestants have protested this move because it harms ecumenical attempts, and not least because it denigrates their churches. However, I say good for him. It is nice of him to reaffirm where he stands instead of playing loose with the Catholic truth. Of course he is wrong about the Roman Catholic church being the only true church but he is correct that there is only one Church. The Church/Body of Jesus Christ of which all people are members if they have received the Spirit of Christ which testifies to their sonship. The Pope may or may not be a member of the Church based on this criteria but his leadership of the Roman church guarantees him nothing more than always having a nice hat to wear. I also agree that he needs to stress some of the truths of Christianity over against what has been promulgated in the wake of Vatican II. We can only pray that he and all Catholics will come to recognise that we are the children of God based on Christ’s Spirit indwelling us and not on which building we happen to worship in or who our ecclesiastical leaders are.
