Gospel of Judas update

While surfing the SBL website and checking out the Handbook of Style I came across another article by April DeConick, More on the Gospel Truth, in which she responds to National Geographic’s rebuttal to her op-ed piece in the NY Times. She mentions some startling statistics. Two million people watched the Gospel of Judas documentary and by the middle of 2006 over a million copis of the book had been sold in 19 languages! That’s coverage.
She discusses the importance of this issue for scholarship and mentions many other scholars who generally agree with her stance. She ends by quoting the SBL’s resolution with regards to new manuscript finds, something which stands in opposition to NGS’ refusal to acknowledge the lack of scholarly integrity their actions demonstrate. Also of interest is that the NGS has now made full size pictures of Codex Tchacos available on their ftp site. This includes not only the Gospel of Judas but the other documents as well: Letter of Peter to Philip, James, A Book of Allogenes, and some fragments. This should greatly help scholars discern the contents of the documents and confirm the state of the material with regards to the points that April has raised. Having no knowledge of Coptic I cannot comment.
