Matthew 22-24

The religious leaders are now very intent on trapping Jesus. It is quite humorous that “Hearing that Jesus had silenced the Sadducees, the Pharisees got together” (22:34). He in return traps them with a question and “No one could say a word in reply, and from that day on no one dared to ask him any more questions” (22:45). Don’t try to trick God’s Word with questions about God’s word!

In 23:33 Jesus asks, ““You snakes! You brood of vipers! How will you escape being condemned to hell?” He answers his own question by saying he is sending prophets, sages and teachers. However, instead of listening they will persecute and kill them. Future events, including the destruction of the temple in 70 AD, can be seen foretold here (24:2). Jesus talks further about the end times and says “And this gospel of the kingdom will be preached in the whole world as a testimony to all nations, and then the end will come.” This was significant to AB Simpson, founder of the Alliance, and many others in his generation who believed that by engaging in missions we are speeding the return of Christ.
