Titus 1-3

At the beginning of this letter Paul deals with the qualities of elders. Today these things apply to our elected elders and also our pastors. It is unfortunate that many have lost sight of the foundation for this: “He must hold firmly to the trustworthy message as it has been taught, so that he can encourage others by sound doctrine and refute those who oppose it” (1:9). We read about pastors “falling” in the newspaper but seldom do we ever read about an “elder” falling although I’m sure it happens. Both are responsible for upholding Truth in lifestyle and teaching. Of those who have fallen into sin Paul says, “rebuke them sharply, so that they will be sound in the faith” (1:13). Let this always be our guiding principle if we need to rebuke our brothers or sisters. In the second chapter Timothy is told what to teach individuals depending on their role. All our responsible for living out their role in Christ to the best of their abilities and it is Timothy’s job to help them grow that ability. May it be so with us.
