How’s that for acronyms!?! Tonight we distributed about 100 care packages to the homeless in Walley in conjunction with the House of the Good Shepherd Monday night food provision. As you know, or maybe you don’t, it’s pretty cold out these nights with snow and ice on the ground. It is heartening to see these people get a hot meal and the warm clothes we provided but disheartening to think that so many live on the street and under the power of Satan through drug and alcohol addiction. Some of the recipients were young 20ish but most looked much older and have obviously had a hard life. Those we talked to were quite intelligent and had interesting stories. I would wonder why they were on the street when they were so bright and interactive. I remember one time at Union Gospel Mission a guy told me he had been a TWU student but a coke addiction led him to the streets where he had spent 10 years and counting.
Pastor Rob and a couple of other guys shared about how they had been released from that lifestyle and offered the chance for others to become free through Jesus. It was great to see that many of those who volunteer with HotGS know intimately the power of Christ to remove someone from that life and can help, not just with spiritual platitudes, but with practical assistance born of their own experience.
A BIG Thank You to all of you who donated articles for the packages and/or money so that we could ensure that each bag had a full selection of items. We made about 200 bags and the remainder will be distributed by Pastor Rob before Christmas.
God bless and a Merry Christmas to all and to all a warm sleep!
P.S. Someone make sure that next year Esther knows not to wear slip-on shoes with no socks when distributing the packages outdoors for an hour and a half in freezing temperatures!
