At what point does an instrument of torture and death become scary?

The BBC is reporting that St John’s Church in Broadbridge Heath England has decided that their crucifix was “too scary.” It was scaring young children and put people off. It doesn’t look that scary to me. It is black because it is made of coal dust and resin and displays Christ’s agony on the cross. Mel Gibson didn’t do too poorly depicting the agony of Jesus at his death, raking in over $600 million worldwide according to Wikipedia. I can see their point in depicting the empty cross symbolising Christ’s resurrection but somehow I don’t think their new stainless steel cross will have quite the same impact.

BTW, The Passion of the Christ is being released on Blu-ray soon. After February 17 you will be able to see Jesus whipped, beaten and crucified in high-definition. Is that a good thing? A scary thing? (double entendre intended!).
