How safe are soy beans?

My wife told me yesterday that it is a “commonly known fact” in China that if a woman wants to give birth to a girl she drinks soy milk. I said, “WHAT!” She didn’t seem to think this was a startling notion with far reaching implications. If that’s true then obviously there are some serious chemicals in soy beans. What does it do to guys who drink soy milk if it can ensure a woman gives birth to a girl? A quick Google search turned up a lot of unsettling information. There was, among others, a long and detailed article in Mothering Magazine in May/June 2004 detailing the effects of soy: Kaayla T. Daniel, “Whole Soy Story: The Dark Side of America’s Favorite Health Food.”
The letters link at the bottom provides access to a number of letters from people who disagree with her conclusions. Although much of the brunt of these objections focus on process soy products the fact that soy milk is “commonly known” by Chinese to produce girls points to a greatly disturbing fact about the estrogen related chemicals in soy.

Maybe that’s why soy products are naturally so disgusting – because God never intended for us to eat them. Sounds good me, I can certainly live without soy!

  1. yup, they smell really bad too after it re-surfaced. But disgusting as it is, some kids who are allergic to cow’s milk are dependent on this yucky little bean for the first 9 months of their lives.

  2. Weston Price (www.westonaprice.org/soy) has a bunch of articles about soy, talking about how bad it is as well. I frankly can’t stand the stuff, so finding out that it’s not good for me is no big deal… but read your labels, because soy and soybean oil shows up all over the place.
