Lou Dobbs hot under the collar!

I just watched this You Tube video of a CNN episode with Lou Dobbs about a proposed UN resolution to limit the criticism of religion. Dobbs is irate at the suggestion that the UN should have power to regulate “free speech” and advocates bulldozing the UN building in New York if this goes ahead. He also interviews Christopher Hitchens, an opponent of religion, who wrote God is Not Great: How Religion Poisons Everything. Hitchens says this proposed binding resolution is “rape and butchery of the US Constitution.” Dobbs rejoinders with saying that the UN is a totalitarian organisation seeking to control thought. Of course he and Hitchens would never try and control thought (er…public opinion).

Those are fighting words! It will be interesting to see how these two totalitarian systems work things out. The one believes that they possess the Truth in the form of God’s perfect revelation to humankind in the form of the Qur’an and the other believes they possess the Truth in the form of the US Constitution and the democratic system. Both seek to have everyone on earth accept their paradigm and have written and acted extensively to bring this about. Both worship at the altar of false gods and I am thankful that, so far at least, we can openly criticise one another. I do have to agree with Dobbs and Hitchens in that the promulgation by humans of “one way” without the ability of others to object to that “one way” is by definition totalitarianism. God will testify against Hitchens based on his own values though…he was given free will to accept or reject God and his rejection of God will lead to results that he will have to live with eternally. God forces no one to accept (or reject) him. Hence the Fall and the presence of evil in the world.
