A second John C. Maxwell book in the BAC library is Developing the Leader Within You. This is the first edition although it was popular enough, selling over 500,000 copies, that a second edition was published in 2000.
John C. Maxwell, Developing the Leader Within You. Nashville: Thomas Nelson, 1993. xiii + 207. 0840767447.
This book is showing its age and if you have only time to read one Maxwell book make it Leadership Gold which I previously reviewed. I particularly liked his O.J. Simpson quote – I’m know that didn’t make it into the second edition (Really, I do know because I searched it on Amazon). There are ten chapters, each dealing with an aspect of leadership: influence, priorities, integrity, creating positive change, problem-solving, attitude, people, vision, self-discipline, and staff development.
Maxwell includes a lot of quotations and, on the whole, tends to over-simplify matters. I can see that his thought has matured and developed over the years. He was still a pastor when he wrote this book and that influence shows in his illustrations, even quoting D.L. Moody on occasion. While there is some valuable stuff here that isn’t included in Leadership Gold you probably won’t find it valuable enough to read this whole book.
