And you thought your family was dysfunctional!

I saw this byline in the BBC today and was heartened: “A Pakistani gang rape victim who won international acclaim as a campaigner for women’s rights has married.” Once a woman has been gang raped in such a society it would be hard for her to get married because she is “spoiled goods” so I was glad to think that Mukhtar Mai found someone to love her – and then I read the details…

*A married man, Nasir Abbas, sent his parents to ask her to marry him as a second wife.
*She refused so as not to ruin the first wife’s life.
*He then threatened to divorce his first wife and to commit suicide (presumably not at the same time).
*His sisters are married into his first wife’s family so if he divorced her his sisters’ husbands would divorce them as well.
*Soooooo the first wife and the two sisters begged Mai to marry Abbas.
***Mai concludes: “So I married him on humanitarian grounds. I didn’t want three families breaking up because of me.”

I’ve heard of weird things happening in our society as well but this really takes the cake…the whole bag of flour and all. Talk about disrespect for the institution of marriage!
