Deuteronomy 25-27

Chapter 25 includes the command that if a man dies his brother is to marry his wife and provide offspring for him. This led to the Sadducees testing Jesus with the scenario of seven brothers all being married to one woman one after another as each died. Whose wife would she be in heaven? In the story of Boaz he acted as Ruth’s kinsman redeemer in this sense but it seems to have been something seldom practiced in Israel. Chapter 26 again deals with firstfruits and tithes before turning to ceremonial commands in chapter 27. The latter half of 27 deals with a ceremony of commands and decrees and the resultant cursing of anyone who fails to obey them. It must have been quite a sight to see the tribe members arrayed on the hill calling out curses with the people responding “Amen.”
