Joshua 13-15

These chapters are concerned with the division of the land. Chapter 13 records the land that has not yet been conquered. Then that which has been put under Israelite control is distributed according to the prior understanding. Even that which is still under enemy control but has been promised to them is to be likewise divided up: “As for all the inhabitants of the mountain regions from Lebanon to Misrephoth Maim, that is, all the Sidonians, I myself will drive them out before the Israelites. Be sure to allocate this land to Israel for an inheritance, as I have instructed you” (13:6).

Caleb is rewarded for his dedication to God by receiving Hebron. The description of the land allotment is quite detailed. Chapter 15 deals only with the tribe of Judah. First the general area is described with its boundaries; then a detailed list of towns is provided by area for the southern, western foothills, hill country, and wilderness regions.
