4and1 Today’s book is another from BAC’s sports biography section. It can be found in the church library under 796.3 GIB.

Joe J. Gibbs with Jerry B. Jenkins, Joe Gibbs: Fourth and One. Nashville: Thomas Nelson, 1991. 0840776608. 284pp. GV939.G48A3.

Joe Gibbs was the coach of the Washington Redskins for many years but has retired from the NFL and is currently running Joe Gibb’s racing. He has been a Christian since his youth and this biography, written with Jerry B. Jenkins, tells the story of his life up until the end of the 1990 NFL season. Gibbs mixes football stories with vignettes from his personal life and business dealings. Unfortunately, if you are not interested in football this book is not for you. The bulk of material concerns his game by game remembrances of his NFL coaching career to that point. The material about his Christian walk and the hardships he faced in life is valuable for everyone but if you don’t like football you won’t want to wade through field goals and touchdowns to find it. That said, those with even a passing interest in football (pun intended) will enjoy Gibbs’ stories and appreciate this recount of his life for its honesty and straightforwardness.
