Joshua 19-21

Filed under: Old Testament — Thomas @ 21:08

In chapter 19 the selection of land by casting lots continues with Simeon being selected second. Their share came from that allotted to Judah because Judah had more land than people to occupy it. Zebulun was next and Issachar was fourth followed by Asher, Naphtali, and lastly Dan. I love some of the descriptions of the boundaries. For example, Naphtali’s provision beings with “Their boundary went from Heleph and the large tree in Zaanannim…” I hope no one cut down that large tree! I imagine proper boundary markers were erected once the allotment process was finished. After all this was said and done Joshua selected a town for himself in the hill country of Ephraim and settled there.

Chapter 20 details the selecting of the cities of refuge as was commanded through Moses. Chapter 21 records the selecting of cities for the Levites to live in as they did not receive any land but still needed somewhere to live. Each tribe allotted certain cities for their use. This section devoted to dividing up the land ends with the note that “Not one of all the Lord’s good promises to the house of Israel failed; every one was fulfilled” (21:45).
