Chapter 13 records the aborted attempt to bring the Ark back to Jerusalem. Uzzah was killed when he reached out to steady the ark when the oxen stumbled (although no cart is mentioned here). It is noted that David feared God that day. Chapter 14 records David’s success in producing offspring and in defeating the Philistines. It concludes that “David’s fame spread throughout every land, and the LORD made all the nations fear him” (14:17). First David feared God and then the Lord caused the nations to fear him.

In chapter 15 the Ark is successfully brought to Jerusalem after proper preparations were made. “David said, ‘No one but the Levites may carry the ark of God, because the LORD chose them to carry the ark of the LORD and to minister before him forever’” (v2). Thus obedience once again results in blessing, rather than curse (v15). The chapter concludes by recording Michal’s reaction to this: “As the ark of the covenant of the LORD was entering the City of David, Michal daughter of Saul watched from a window. And when she saw King David dancing and celebrating, she despised him in her heart.” Unlike the previous account which explained his nakedness was seen by young maidens no mention is made here of a reason for her despising him.
