Are you going to Church on December 25?

According to this Time article “by holding Christmas Eve services that cater to first-time visitors and shuttering their doors on Christmas Day, churches often fail to meet the spiritual needs of their longtime members on one of the holiest days of the year.”

I’m not sure how you can make your Christmas Eve service “seeker focused” while failing to meet the spiritual needs of the faithful which seems to be what Time is upset about. I grew up in a church that always had candlelight Christmas Eve services and never had Christmas Day services. We would have some special music and perhaps a short skit and then a short message from the pastor before singing some more. We always ended by lighting candles and singing Silent Night. The whole service took about an hour and encapsulated everything that Christmas is about. Would a seeker focused Christmas service remove some of the elements of Christmas and add cultural material? Personally I think that is someone is coming to a Christmas Eve service at a church they are probably there for the Christmas and not sensitivity.
