One living woman – 1400 descendents

This year saw the death of Rachel Krishevsky at the ripe old age of 99. She married at the age of 19 and had seven sons and four daughters. Nothing remarkable about that for someone born 100 years ago. However, the fact that those sons daughters went on to produce sons and daughters and sons and daughters totaling 1400 descendants during that 100 years is remarkable! Let’s just say their family tree looks more like a forest! If the Hebrews in Egypt showed this kind of exuberant growth it is no wonder Pharaoh was concerned. If Egypt’s birthrate was anything like our own the Hebrews would soon have overwhelmed the entire country.

UPDATE February 21, 2010. The New York Times had an article today about Yitta Schwartz who died in January at age 93 leaving behind around 2000 descendants. She was a member of the Satmar Hasidic sect where having nine children is merely average!
