Quote of the Day – Dom Helder Camara

Dom Helder Camara was a Brazilian Bishop who had this to say:

“When I give food to the poor, they call me a saint. When I ask why the poor have no food, they call me a Communist.”

This was said in the context of South America during the Vietnam War era but I think if you substitute “health care” for food you will get the idea. Thus…

“When I build hospitals and give medical care to the poor, they call me a saint. When I ask why the poor have no health insurance, they call me a Communist.”

As a Canadian I can’t really understand why Americans are so opposed to universal health care. It has worked up here for generations. From our experience controlling the costs is important, but if Americans controlled their costs ours would be lower because seemingly we have to keep increasing them in order to “compete” with the USA and retain our nurses and doctors.
